Bleeding basslines and cosmic kick drums

Ink
Just when you thought the lazy streets and bars of Berlin were only home to the worlds best Techno there are forward thinking producers like Robot Koch bluring the boundaries of Dubstep, Hip Hop, and Electronica, walking the same streets and rocking the same squat parties. Songs for Trees and Cyborgs is in my mind one of the best albums of 2010, a perfect snap shot of where the constantly merging bass music generation is heading. …continue reading Bleeding basslines and cosmic kick drums

I Heart SF

sf

San Francisco the little brother to Los Angeles in the Californian Beat-Movement may never be as big, but what it lacks in size it is making up for in creativity. Today I’d like to share a Brainfeeder podcast and a freebie track from SF based producer Eskmo breaking new grounds in cross genre hybriding. Although he’s been making music for the better part of a decade Eskmo’s latest works have seen him touring Europe and the States for the last couple of years. With releases on Planet Mu, Warp, his own label Ancestor, and his track Hypercolor being placed in the top 100 tracks of 2009 by Bleep.com Eskmo is definitely one too look out for in 2010.

His “genre-less” approach to bass music sees the formation of dark and emotive tracks that utilise a sea of uniquely recorded cracks, snaps and percussive elements. You could almost believe his beats were living breathing entities or sonic trees snapping and creaking in wind.

What if … ?

Now I know everyone has been busy on their own little easter egg hunts, whether they be around your house, back yard, the damp streets of Shoreditch or traipsing through the blogosphere… but it’s now time to kick back and gorge on your loot which is why I’m sharing this post/mix with you… perfect for a long weekend lie in.

This week we’ve got a mix from an up and coming star in the Dubstep scene, Kito is a producer from one of the most isolated cities on the planet, Perth, Australia is home to a growing Dubstep scene and thriving Dnb community that you brought you the likes of Pendulum. Currently signed to Skream’s label Disfigured Dubs. She’s been on Mary Anne Hobbs show on Radio One and is tipped to be one of the next big things in Dubstep. Recently relocated to London and currently touring through Europe you can catch her unique take on Dubstep on the 23rd of April at Deadly Rhythm @ The Legion in London.

Look out!

For those of you not in the know prepare to be shocked and amazed! This coming Friday 2nd of April for the Easter long weekend the Coronet is holding the launch party for one of the biggest festivals of the year. In fact it’s the only festival that that specifically belts out our favourite Dubstep, Hip Hop and Big Bass music tunes along the beautiful beaches of Croatia. In 2010 the festival will grace Punta christo, an abandoned fort used in the eighteen hundreds with stages build around dugeons, and old ruins its going to experience to remember for the rest of your days.

This goes out to all my hiphop heads

With Wu-tang releasing a hip hop/dubstep crossbreed album, Hudson Mohawke bringing us his unique style of electro-crunky-wonk-hop with hit debut album Butter and Raekwon the Chef bringing us yet another awesome album, 2009 hasn’t just been a huge year for electronic music it’s been a massive year for hip hop too (that’s right folks it’s not dead yet!).

On that note a talented UK DJ by the name of Chris P Cuts has put together a mix to mark closing of yet another decade of hip hop. Chris P has been active in the London scene for a number of years now, his latest mix is called “Going in 2009″ and it sure is tasty stuff. It’s got all the best hip hop joints from 2009 with a few leftfield electronic numbers thrown in for good measure. Enjoy it!

Jazzin’

From the cats who brought you the Box of Dub series and the original Steppa’s Delight, Soul Jazz Records have just released another dubstep compliation, Steppa’s Delight 2 : Dubstep Present to Future. It’s a compilation that brings together a bunch of scene defining tracks from both originators of the scene and up and coming artists pushing bass music in a new and interesting direction. For fans of the label, it definitely lives up to the standard of the first installment.

Steppa's Delight 2

Soul Jazz the London based label have been pressing and releasing music since the mid 1990s, originally specializing in reggae, dub, funk, hip hop and soul they have since broadened their musical repertoire to include more electronic releases but often still staying true to more organically formed beats.
