So where does the name Bobby Tank come from?

Ahh yes well ‘Tank’ is my surname (actually spelt Taank, see what i did there..ha!). ‘Bobby’ is my nick name that was given to me at birth, due to my cranium being slightly excessive in proportion 2 the rest of my body, It seemed fairly unstable and would ‘Bob’ around ha. ha. The rest im sure u can work out though i can assure you that (he that shall not be named) who nick named me, him and i do not share the same ‘creativity’ gene…

Omar says yeS

Much has been written about Kyle Hall in recent months, and with good reason. After his debut single on FXHE garnered support from the likes of Theo Parrish and Omar S, the Detroit native’s breakthrough came in the form of his brilliant remix of Darkstar’s “Aidy’s girl is a computer” on Hyperdub last year. Kyle has followed this up with a solid EP on the same label as well as a few on his own, cheekily named Wild Oats (geddit? Hall, Oats? ah nevermind). It is his unconventional, almost naive take on making music that gives one the sense that Kyle has thrown out the template and makes his own rules in the studio. Warm, noodly keys layered on top of drunken drum patterns shows the rest of us that electronic music needn’t always be about perfectly sequenced patterns and rhythms. This loose approach gives his music a somewhat live, DIY feel. Stomping all over the definition of what might be considered UK Funky, Dubstep, Deep House or Techno, Hall’s broken rhythms are a breath of fresh air into the world of pre-packaged beats and throwaway grooves. Oh and did i mention he’s only 18! …continue reading Omar says yeS

Inaudible beats

Huess
Huess is an up and coming UK talent signed to Inaudible Answer and he’s sure to make a big splash with his latest release, I’d rather be hunter. We’ve been lucky enough to grab a preview track from this release to share with everyone! Radiating similar vibes to other up and comers like Bullion with his multi layered, swung tempo compositions and skillfully mutilated vocals you can expect many comparisons to hip hop heavy weights like Flying Lotus and J Dilla.

Preludes to sweaty streets

summer
As preludes to spring and summer shine through the clouds of London I can’t help but get a little bit excited. So it seems as good a time as any to share with you a couple of the summery releases I’ve been mulling over the last month.

Bonobo is a UK musician/producer currently signed to Ninja Tune who has been doing Downtempo, Trip Hop-esk beats for the last ten years. He’s a multi instrumentalist and producer and is one of the only downtempo artists to succesfully transfer his music to the live arena in an interesting and exciting way. …continue reading Preludes to sweaty streets

Who’s Pants?

James Pants
I don’t know about you but I’ve been waiting quite some time for this album to be released and it’s been in hot anticipation by critics the world over. Ever since James Pants was signed to Stones Throw Records at the beginning of the naughties and when Stones Throw head honcho Peanut Butter Wolf announced James Pants to be the “next big thing” a buzz has been stirring.

2010: It’s almost the future, where’s my flying car dammit!?

As much as I love a good angry wobble trasher, I and I’m sure a lot of other people are growing a bit weary of LFO induced wobble bass bangers that have little variation and seems to all sound the same. Lately my ears tend to be perking up to the sounds of a deeper “Future Garage” sound, usually more sampled based and incorporating elements of techno, garage, classic break beat rave, dub and reggae.

What a rip! It's almost 2010 and we still don't have hover boards or flying cars.

With deep house and techno elements making a bit of a come back in all styles of electronic music in the last few years it only makes sense that these strains of dubstep, 2 step, and new school garage are combining to make a new exciting hybrid for a new decade. As science tell us with every action there is an equal and opposite reaction, much like in music (and social tastes) there is opposites and reactions of backlashes and revivals (whether it be from grungy to poppy or dirty to deep). Now having not lived in the UK during the high points in 2 step, garage and even some of the early dub influenced dubstep from the early naughties, I felt as though I might have missed out on some of the best years for UK electronic music. However as I discover more and more interesting new music taking influence from the past, I feel quite fortunate to have lived through the naughties, despite what other people might say about the state of music these days.

Something to get you started….

I’ve spent a long time talking and thinking about starting up something musical online to give back to the community that has given me so much over the years, and I guess that opportunity starts today….

So just to get everyone started I’d like to present a mix from a small time Australian DJ who dabbles in production currently residing in London (UK), he goes by the name Snifit. This mix is titled “Wobble Bleep Volume 1″ and is a first in a series he’s running. I chose it as it’s a fairly diverse mix and explores many of the genres I hope to further document within these virtual pages in the near future.

This mix starts off with some Wonky Hip Hop and Future Beat, then adds a dash of Funky Breaks, a splash of Glitch and finishes off with a tasty hint of Dubstep

Enjoy on a damp, dreary Sunday in London with High Tea or Scones for best results … not after a visit to the dentist with only watermelon to comfort you…
